Research

Tourism NT provides research and analysis on the economic value of tourism to the Territory’s economy. Our data assists and informs industry, Regional Tourism Organisations and government partners in strategic planning, campaign development and investment.

Domestic Tourism Statistics (DoTS) is the new Tourism Research Australia (TRA) approach to reporting Australian-resident travel statistics. The change came into effect in January 2025, replacing the National Visitor Survey (NVS). The first DoTS visitor data is available for the March quarter 2025.

The new approach combines the richness and breadth of survey data (collected via face to face and online interviews) with the large sample sizes available in mobility data

The new DoTS approach is an innovative development as it represents a more modern way to understand the NT visitor economy and will help the NT’s Department of Tourism and Hospitality deliver better outcomes for the tourism industry and the wider state economy.

For the Year Ending March 2025, the domestic overnight travel results for the NT (trips, nights, spend) are available at total state level by Interstate or Intra-Territory. Historical data up to 2019 are back cast to certain levels. Caution is required when interpreting historical back cast data.

Data availability will progress with each new quarter with the first DoTS rolling annual figures for 2025 available in March 2026 providing more data components.  This change in approach means domestic visitation figures provided previously are not directly comparable given differences in methodology.

Meanwhile, the International Visitor Survey results are released as usual.

The interactive dashboard will allow a detailed look into each of the Northern Territory tourism regions.
