DoTS Frequently asked questions

Find out more about Tourism Research Australia's new Domestic Tourism Statistics collection, or DoTS.

Who decided to change the methodology and why?

Domestic Tourism Statistics (DoTS) is the new Tourism Research Australia (TRA) approach to reporting Australian-resident travel statistics. Australians’ willingness to participate in phone surveys like the National Visitor Survey (NVS) is declining and this was reducing the accuracy and quality of the data being collected. The change came into effect in January 2025, replacing the NVS.

The new approach combines the richness and breadth of survey data (collected via face to face and online interviews) with the large sample sizes available in mobility data.

What does this mean for my tourism business and the industry?

The new DoTS approach is an innovative development to understand the NT visitor economy and will help the NT’s Department of Tourism and Hosipitality deliver better outcomes for the tourism industry and the wider state economy.

  • modernise and futureproof production of Australian-resident tourism statistics
  • provide a range of outputs delivered at different levels of geography
  • improve the quality and timeliness of data delivery.

DoTS applies to domestic tourism only, so is relevant for the interstate and intrastate markets, which sit within the remit of State Tourism Organisations (STOs) like Tourism NT, and Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs), respectively.

Will the International Visitor Survey (IVS) continue?

There are no changes to the way international visitor statistics are generated, and no changes to the International Visitor Survey.

What is Tourism NT doing in reaction to the changes?

For the Year Ending March 2025, the domestic overnight travel results for the NT (trips, nights, spend) are available at total state level by Interstate or Intra-Territory. Historical data up to 2019 are back cast to certain levels. Caution is required when interpreting historical back cast data.

Data availability will progress with each new quarter with the first DoTS rolling annual figures for 2025 available in March 2026 providing more data components.  This change in approach means domestic visitation figures provided previously are not directly comparable given differences in methodology.

Meanwhile, the International Visitor Survey results are released as usual.
