Turbocharged tourism hits $2.5 billion

The Northern Territory's turbocharged tourism industry continues to grow, with $2.5 billion spent by tourists over the past year.

The latest figures from Tourism Research Australia show total visitor expenditure increased by 18 per cent in the year ending June 2019.

Total visitors also recorded double digit growth, up 11 per cent on the previous 12 months to 1.95 million.

In further signs the Government's Turbocharging Tourism investment continues to make inroads in the global market, international tourists to the Territory increased by four per cent - the equal highest for the country alongside Victoria.

Japan lead the way, up by an impressive 56 per cent to 40,000.

China also continued to deliver solid growth, on the back of the introduction of direct flights between Shenzhen and Darwin, increasing by 35 per cent to 23,000.

There was good news at home too, with total domestic visitors up by 13 per cent.

While length of stay decreased slightly from 7.6 to 6.3 nights, visitors spent more while they were in the Territory with average visitor spend up 6.2 per cent to $1,307.

The latest figures are encouraging signs for the Territory and the recently released Northern Territory Tourism Industry Strategy 2030, which sets a road map for growth to between between $3.01 billion and $3.67 billion in total visitor expenditure by 2030.
