Data Sources and Other Tourism Research Providers

Tourism NT uses a wide range of research sources to assist in providing strategic insight for marketing, strategy and planning responsibilities.

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
The ABS produces statistics on a range of tourism related activities. Tourism data produced by the ABS are used to assist in the measurement of the size and structure of tourism. Major publications used by Tourism NT include:
  • 8635.0 - Survey of Tourist Accommodation
  • 3401.0 - Overseas Arrivals and Departures

Tourism Australia (TA)
Tourism Australia is responsible for international and domestic tourism marketing as well as the delivery of research and forecasts to the sector through the research department, Tourism Research Australia (TRA). The TRA provides Quarterly visitor data through the National Visitor Survey (NVS) and the International Visitor Survey (IVS).

The information provided in our reports using these surveys is subject to sampling variability. Please read NVS & IVS Visitor Data Reliability for more information.

Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC)
STCRC is a not-for-profit company owed by its industry, government and university partners. Tourism NT works in collaboration with STCRC on several projects.

Decipher
Decipher was developed by the Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC) and provides an online data warehouse for tourism business research and intelligence. It is a 'one-stop shop' for tourism related information supplied by over 100 agencies including STOs, Tourism Australia, the ABS, Roy Morgan and Australian local government.

The website allows users to build reports, which includes discrete packets of information from other sources, in a single document. As such, it has the potential to reduce costs of discovery and access for tourism business and organisations seeking research and business intelligence.
