East Arnhem Land Tourism Development Plan 2008-2010

East Arnhem Land is a unique region that provides opportunities for special interest visitors to experience traditional Yolŋu culture and art, world-class blue water fishing and a pristine natural environment.

The East Arnhem Land Tourism Development Plan was prepared to bring together a range of stakeholders to establish a framework for tourism development within East Arnhem Land and to provide direction to these stakeholders to maximise opportunities for the next three to five years from 2008 to 2010/2012.

The plan identifies the following seven key strategies for tourism development in East Arnhem Land:

  1. Improve the provision of visitor services and infrastructure for tourists in the region.
  2. Adopt a collaborative approach to tourism development and marketing of East Arnhem Land.
  3. Support the development of East Arnhem Land tourism businesses through a coordinated approach to capacity building, planning and relevant and practical training.
  4. Develop and establish Nhulunbuy as the visitor gateway to East Arnhem Land and to Yolŋu culture, and as the service centre for tourism operators.
  5. Assist development of culturally and environmentally appropriate product and regulate and manage cultural and environmental impacts of tourism activities.
  6. Capitalise on existing tourism markets, and attract and develop new markets where access and accommodation is not an issue.
  7. Position and promote East Arnhem Land as a unique area to experience Aboriginal art and culture, world-class fishing and a pristine natural environment.

The document was prepared by a team of consultants in consultation with tourism operators and stakeholders in the region, including representatives of the region’s Indigenous bodies, the Northern Land Council, regional tourism organisations and associations and a number of government departments.
