Uluru-Kata Tjuta region

The development of the Red Centre Way is based on sealing of the "Mereenie Loop", which includes Luritja Road and Larapinta and Namatjira Drives, connecting Uluru with Alice Springs.

The route passes through some of the NT's most spectacular countryside and offers opportunities for strategic tourism development, in particular encompassing Tourism NT's two building blocks of nature-based and cultural tourism (incorporating indigenous culture together with history and heritage).

Planned development includes:

  • New four-wheel drive routes
  • Enhanced signage and interpretation
  • Campground and alternate accommodation
  • Rest area and key node facility upgrades
  • New cultural and nature tours
  • Commercial developments reflecting consumer needs identified by strategic research

Tourism NT is working collaboratively with key private and government stakeholders including indigenous communities, Parks & Wildlife, Parks Australia North, Department of Planning & Infrastructure, Desert Knowledge Australia and Central Australian Tourism Industry Association.

This significant development will include a push for World Heritage listing for the greater West MacDonnell Ranges, and will link the great icons of Uluru and Kata Tjuta with the desert hub town of Alice Springs.
