Strengthening the Position of Alice Springs Tourism

In 2008, Tourism NT commissioned Charles Darwin University (CDU) to undertake consultations with members of the tourism industry, community, government and business to inform actions that would continue to strengthen tourism for Alice Springs and the Red Centre.

A new action plan is being prepared based on an analysis of consumer and market trends, stakeholder consultations undertaken by CDU and the refreshed marketing approach for the Red Centre. The action plan will be implemented in partnership with Tourism Central Australia, the Alice Springs Town Council, the NT Chamber of Commerce and other Northern Territory Government agencies.  The new action plan will be released in 2009.

Value of Heritage Tourism

Up until August 2005 there was no information available on the social and economic value of heritage assets in the Northern Territory. Given this absence of information about the contribution of heritage to tourism, Tourism NT commissioned Charles Darwin University to quantify the value of heritage tourism and identify opportunities for the growth of this sector.

The resulting report - 'Understanding the Value of Heritage Tourism in Alice Springs' (PDF, 1.9MB) - reveals some exciting findings and gives a factual basis for the heritage tourism sector to plan for its strategic development.
