In December 2012, Tourism NT’s industry development team transferred to the Department of Business (DoB) as part of the Northern Territory Government’s commitment to better support tourism, and recognise its importance as an economic driver, through a whole of government approach.
Grant Whan (Alice Springs), Karina Files (Tennant Creek), and Kylie Salisbury (Katherine) will continue to work on tourism development programs as client managers within the DoB’s Business Liaison and Support Unit based in their respective locations. They will have additional support, a broader scope, and work individually and together to raise the profile of tourism within the Department.
Melanie Reichlmeier, well known to industry as Tourism NT’s Business Development Manager, is now providing her expertise and understanding of business to DoB’s Economic and Policy branch, where she will seek to bring about changes that make business development easier to achieve and will continue to manage the Tourism Enhancement Fund.
DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS
The Department of Business actively promotes the Northern Territory as a place to live and work locally, nationally and internationally. The Northern Territory maintains a very low unemployment rate and has a workforce participation rate that is well above the national average. As such, there is a skills shortage in the Territory in many occupations. DoB works closely with Territory businesses to identify workforce needs, and strategically plans to address these needs. This includes developing employment programs to skill, attract and retain workers in the Northern Territory.
The Territory Jobs – Gearing up the Workforce 2012 – 2015 employment strategy builds on the achievements and targets of previous NT Job Plans with a continued focus on optimizing jobs for Territorians. It also focuses on supporting businesses to be better placed to grow and work through workforce challenges and opportunities presented with the commencement of major projects. Its focus is on skilling and employing Territorians, growing the workforce through interstate attraction campaigns and only using overseas skilled migration as the last resort where skill shortages still exist.
