Budget 2012-2013

Budget 2012 provides additional investment in key strategic areas for the tourism industry, including business events, cruise market development and China market activation; and continued focus on existing markets through global marketing activities and working with airlines, national suppliers and tourism distribution partners. 

Tourism NT has been allocated $41.5 million in 2012-13.  This comprises revenues from various sources such as the NT Government, the Commonwealth Government and others.  The NT Government's appropriation for Tourism NT for 2012-13 is $39.2 million; the same as the 2011-12 estimate.

This year’s initiatives include additional focus on destination based marketing, increased cooperation with Tourism Australia and gateway cities to promote the Territory internationally and enhanced focus on the East.

Key initiatives

Tourism is a key economic driver of the Northern Territory economy and provides flow on benefits to a wide variety of other industry sectors.  The tourism industry supports 19,800 jobs and accounts for 17.2 percent of total employment; meaning around one in six Territorians are employed as a result of the tourism sector.  Tourism’s contribution to the Territory’s Gross State Product totals $1.6 billion or 9.1 percent of total NT GSP.

Budget 2012 will begin to transition the tourism industry towards the new direction evident to be necessary in development of the new tourism industry strategic plan, due for release in early 2013. 

The Northern Territory remains a highly attractive destination amongst our key target markets based on its nature and cultural tourism assets.  Tourism NT will continue to attract visitors by showcasing the NT’s unique holiday experiences and supporting local tourism businesses.
